In the quiet corners of Kitgum District, a quiet revolution is unfolding, one stitch at a time. At the heart of it is a simple but powerful truth: when girls have access to sanitary wear, they stay in school, dream bigger, and shape their futures. Across Africa, one in five school-age girls misses class or drops out entirely due to the inability to manage menstruation safely and with dignity. The statistics are sobering, but the story behind them is even more urgent. Menstruation, a natural biological process, becomes a barrier to education when girls lack access to menstrual products, clean facilities, and supportive environments. “Menstruation should never be a reason […]
Network for Community Development (NCD) and Women and Rural Development Networks (WORUDET), two community-based organizations with decades of experience working on the adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights of diverse adolescents in Uganda; and working directly with adolescents themselves, including those who are amongst the most marginalized in Uganda, express our wholehearted support for the proposal to offer contraception to girls from 15 years old, in Uganda. Out-of-school adolescent girls are often invisible to mainstream SRHR programming. They are the least reached, yet the most in need. The SHE SOARS project—Sexual and reproductive Health and Economic empowerment Supporting Out-of-school Adolescent girls’ Rights and Skills—is designed to change that. Led by CARE Canada and implemented by WORUDET and six other organizations, this six-year initiative (2021–2027) spans Uganda, Kenya, and Zambia, with a total investment of $45 million from Global Affairs Canada. WORUDET’s role is focused on Pillar 1300, which strengthens the capacity of women’s and girls’ rights organizations to advocate for evidence-based, accountable, and equitable SRHR policies and services. This work is being implemented in Arua and Madi-Okolo […]
