WORUDET was founded in 2003 as a response to the humanitarian crisis that was unfolding in Uganda in the late 1990s to early 2000s due to military conflict, a crisis which disproportionately harmed women, girls and children. While many humanitarian groups were addressing short-term emergency and survival needs, few were addressing the long-term effects of conflict, including gender-based violence. It was in that context that WORUDET was founded, as an indigenous organization aimed at spearheading the local/community response to the immediate post-war development challenges burdening women.
