16 days of Gender Activism Campaign 2023

Every year, from November 16th to December 16th, WORUDET stands in solidarity with the global movement to end gender-based violence. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is more than a commemoration, it is a call to action, a reminder that violence against women and girls is not inevitable, and a demand that leaders honor their commitments to protection and justice.

This season is a pivotal time to amplify voices, strengthen awareness, and hold institutions accountable. It is a moment to remind governments, communities, and individuals that the safety and dignity of women and girls must never be compromised. As Ban Ki-moon once declared, “Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation. It must end now.” WORUDET joins this chorus, adding our voice to ensure that promises translate into protection and that awareness leads to action.

In Uganda, gender-based violence continues to occur year after year, leaving scars on families, communities, and the nation’s progress. Silence is not an option. By participating in the 16 Days campaign, WORUDET affirms that awareness is the first step toward change, but accountability and sustained action are what will ultimately break the cycle of violence. We believe that every woman and girl deserves to live free from fear, free from harm, and free to pursue her dreams.

This campaign is not only about raising awareness, it is about building momentum for lasting change. It is about creating spaces where survivors are heard, where communities are mobilized, and where leaders are compelled to act. As the African proverb reminds us, “When the roots are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind.” By deepening our collective commitment to justice and equality, we can withstand the challenges and dismantle the structures that perpetuate violence.

WORUDET’s participation in the 16 Days of Activism is a pledge: a pledge to continue advocating, educating, and mobilizing until gender-based violence is no longer a shadow over our communities. Together, we can transform awareness into action, and action into a future where women and girls live with dignity, safety, and hope.
