Advancing peaceful co-existence and respect for human rights among Refugees and host communities in northern Uganda The sub-region of Acholi in northern Uganda (now comprised of eight districts, namely: Kitgum, Pader, Lamwo, Agago, Amuru, Nwoya, Gulu and Omoro) experienced probably its worst modern-time political history in the last thirty years. Strengthened women’s meaningful participation in conflict prevention in Palabek Refugee settlement and host communities in Lamwo District. WORUDET with funding from WPHF and technical support from UN Women implemented a two-year project from January 2021 to January 2023 in Palabek Refugee Settlement and host community of Palabek Gem and Ogili. The project strengthens women’s voice, leadership and representation in programming, governance and public decision-making in the settlement. Akwii Aidha, 65, lost her husband unexpectedly in 2022. Tensions quickly arose when her older daughter moved into the family home with her own children. Grandmother insisted on a public school, despite financial constraints caused by the crisis, while her daughter chose a private school. They would quickly escalate into a conflict in which the daughter threatened violence with a stick. Akwii turned to our paralegal Aidha for support and guidance. Together, they engaged in a meaningful conversation with her daughter, discussing the practicality of expecting Akwii to finance private schooling without sufficient resources. Lalam Joyce, 36, a mother of five was abandoned by her husband, Franco Obita. Everything was gone, including a lot from the business she ran, resulting in emotional pain that got her contemplating to walk away from her children, let alone suicide. The bottom had fallen out. She, like many vulnerable women in this refugee resettlement, are often recommended to WORUDET paralegal workers like Aidha for help. so, Joyce  earnestly sought Aidha’s audience, and it paid off. James Okot in Palubek Refugee Settlement, Lamwo district, had been in a boundary conflict with a colleague, the two ended up in a violent physical confrontation. Having sensed little way forward, James sought a paralegal worker operating with WORUDET within the settlement, who assessed the case and advised against retaliation, instead guiding about Police involvement.
